What is the 20 Cent tyre test?

The 20 cent coin test is a simple method to check the depth of tread left on a tyre using a 20 cent coin.

How to check your tread using a 20 cent piece

  1. Find a groove in the tyre tread
  2. Insert the 20 cent piece into the groove of the tread with the 20 at the top of the coin
  3. Check if the platypus' bill on the coin is visable above the tread.

If the platypus' bill is not visable, it meands that the tyre has less that 3mm of tread. Although the minimal legal tread depth is 1.5mm, it is recommended that tyres are replaced at 3mm to ensure your tyres are safe to drive on.

Tread Wear Indicator

All tyres also come with tread wear indicators built into their tyres. You will see raised bumps in the grooves of your tyres in which you can measure the wear of the tread. When your tread is flush with the indicators, it means that your tyre tread has worn to 1.6mm and are definitely unsafe to drive on.

If think your tyres could use an inspection, come see us at McCall's Mechanical and Tyres and we can check and replace your tyres for you!
